Experience with setting the Spur League calendar has taught us that finding suitable Saturday race dates can be a nightmare!
Saturdays are cluttered with other school activities and after you cut out holidays, exam times, important derbies and other activities there simply aren't enough left.
In comparison, there are 5 potential midweek days for each Saturday, giving us a whole lot more options to find dates that can work.
Considering that the League aims to limit the number of schools at race geographically, it also makes the coordination of suitable race dates so much easier.
Also, with the main League set for summer, we have ample time to complete a race schedule in afternoon.
Afternoon racing further brings operational cost savings as our organisers can setup and run races on one day as the late start negates the need to do race setup on the previous day. This cost saving translates to cheaper entry fees for participants.
As the schools participating in these clusters are close together, travel time is not such a big factor as when dealing with provincial competitions. A lot of participants will be racing on or close to their schools, depending on the fixture location.
